Y ahora somos tres, con nuestro hijo Daniel Ken completándonos y llevándonos a una nueva etapa en nuestras vidas.

Fueron casi 13 horas de trabajo para Airin, pero al final dió a luz a un bebé sano y con ojos llenos de curiosidad (ya se que aún no pueden enfocar, pero soy un padre nuevecito y se me permite exagerar). Fué una día muy largo para todos, pero más aún para mi esposa. Es increíble la cantidad e intensidad de dolor que implica dar a luz a una nueva vida, y esta experiencia ha incrementado mi amor por Airin, y mi respeto por ella y todas la mujeres que dan vida con regocijo y cariño a pesar de tanto sufrimiento.

Ahora empieza la tarea de ayudar a construir una nueva vida, de guiar a nuestro hijo, de amarlo y respetar su identidad e independencia. Es algo nuevo para nosotros, así que esperamos hacerlo bien y poder darle las herramientas para que el pueda crear su futuro.

And now we are three, with our son Daniel Ken making us whole and leading us into a new stage in our lifes.

There were almost 13 hours of labor for Airin, but in the end she gave birth to a healthy baby with eyes full of curiosity (I know they cannot focus yet, but I am a new father and I am allowed to exagerate). It was a long day for all of us, but particularly for my wife. It is incredible the quantity and intensity of pain that implies giving birth to a new life, and this experience has increased my love for Airin, and my respect for her and all the women that give life with joy and affection in spite of all the suffering.

Now our task starts, that of helping build a new life, of guiding our son, of loving him and respect his individuality and independence. This is something new for us, and we hope to do it well and provide him with the tools to create his own future.

Finalmente sabemos que tendremos un niño. En las ecografías previas el cordón umbilical estaba alojado entre las piernas de nuestro bebé, haciendo imposible el identificar su sexo. El Viernes pasado, el médico (mi amigo Raúl Nishii) nos dijo que era claro que el bebé es un niño. Ya falta poco para que llegue; el alumbramiento es para a fines de Febrero o principios de Marzo, y estamos nerviosos y expectantes por tener a nuestro hijo entre brazos y cuidarlo y quererlo muchísimo.

Finally we know that we are having a boy. The previous ultrasounds showed the umbilical cord lodged between our baby's leg, making it impossible to identify the sex. Last Friday, the M.D. (my friend Raúl Nishii) told us that it was now clear that the baby is a boy. In a short while he'll be here; the baby's delivery is for the end of February or beginning of March, and we are nervous and excited to have our son in our arms and take care and love him very much.

I've been meaning to post this for months now, since a wise friend, who has more experience than me about being a father, send me a congrats email about our developing baby. I am quoting below part of his message, and it is indeed right on the money.

(...) As you likely know, kids are open source - everyone wants to add code and then let you maintain it - but there is no documentation because the programmers are too busy to write anything down. And just when you get a moment to relax the code blows up and you have to change it. Hopefully there is is technical support - grandmothers, etc. (...)
